Very Cool Interactive Map of the Battle of Gettysburg

For this 150th anniversary of the American Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg, a team at the Smithsonian has asked “What more might we learn about this famous battle if we put ourselves in commanders’ shoes, using today’s digital technology to visualize the battlefield and see what they could see?”

Using today’s digital technology, they recreated the 1863 terrain and captured troop positions from historical maps. As a result of their efforts, you can see Union and Confederate troop movements over the course of the battle, July 1 – 3, 1863, revealing what the commanders saw or should have seen, and what they could not have seen. Very impressive! Try it out here.
