February 1, 1966 – LBJ Laments to Eugene McCarthy “I Can’t Get Out”

This fascinating short clip from the Multimedia Archive of University of Virginia Miller Center of Public Affairs Scripps Library (specializing in American politics and history), features President Lyndon Johnson talking to Eugene McCarthy on the telephone about the war in Vietnam and how he feel stuck. It’s sad and incredibly revealing. You can listen to it here. (The assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem, to which he refers, took place during the administration of John F. Kennedy.)
